• Zebras are mammals. They are best known for their distinctive black and white stripes which come in unrelated patterns unique like fingerprints to a human. Zebras are related to horses and have numerous similarities. Like horses, zebras have a single hoof on each foot. They have stubby legs and are similar in size to a pony. But unlike horses, a zebras mane is stiff like a brush and erect like a mohawk. One of its most noticeable features are its stripes. They may stand out at first but when a herd of zebras are running, the stripes make it intricate to tell where one zebra starts and ends and this confuses some predators. The horselike creatures can be found in a variety of habitats all over Africa such as grasslands, savannahs, woodlands, thorny scrub lands, mountains and coastal hills.They are dependent on water, so they must stay within 20 miles of water holes during the dry season which is around April to September. A female zebra (mare) can give birth to a single baby (foal) about 13 months after she mates with a male (stallion). Usually a mare gives birth lying on her side while the rest of the herd stay near by and the stallion keeps watch. A foul can be born any time of the year, but most are born conveniently just before the rainy season.When a foal is born the mother keeps all other zebras (even the members of her family) away from it for 2 or 3 days, until it learns to recognize her by sight, voice and smell. Zebras often drink in groups and form a semi-circle which makes it easer for some of the zebras to watch for predators. When zebras greet each other they often touch noses or rub cheeks. They tell can each other apart from their stripes, smell and voice. Zebras are herbivores. They are very adaptable grazers and feed mainly on grasses but will also eat shrubs, herbs, twigs, leaves and bark. Their well adapted digestive system allows them to sustain on diets of lesser nutritional quality than that necessary for herbivores. With a zebras very sensitive hearing, an ostriches sharp eye sight and a wild-beasts excellent sense of smell, these animals all quickly work together to warn each other of danger if a predator is near. Lions and hyenas are zebras main predators and when necessary zebras can run as fast as 60km per hour to get away. These stripy horses are wild animals and hardly come into human habitat. Although they are very harmless to humans, humans hunt and kill zebras for their one-of–kind hide. Some fashion designers take the look of the zebras unique hide pattern and print it into their fabric. People also use the skin to make rugs.
