How difficult is it to get into the nursing program?

How smart do you have to be to get into the registered nursing program and to comprehend the material.?

  • I am thinking about getting into the registered nursing program but i have never been very good in school and i was just wondering how smart you have to be to get into the program and to comprehend the material.

  • Answer:

The most important asset you can have while in a nursing program is determination and curiosity. I know two people who have completed nursing programs who weren't great students, but they were very interested in the subject and were able to learn. Alot of the classes are going to be tough, but if you have a genuine interest in learning, it will make it easier.

Smart enough to save a life, if need be. Maybe you should look into something else. Nursing isn't really somehthing you can not give a $h!t about, you know? You'll be taking care of poeple who need you.

You have to have a certain level of smarts .. But the material should also be something that grabs you and holds your attention .. Something that you know you'd love to do. That's what keeps you going and makes you want to learn more and retain the info you're being taught ..

It's not about how smart you are, it's about how dedicated to the field you are. Get into the nursing school, study your but off, and the hard work will pay off.

To be an RN, you have to have a decent background in the basic sciences (chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology), a college degree, and pass a state board exam. So I would suggest you have to be pretty smart. (You can't be a slacker or a merely "average" student.) When I was taking medical records courses, there was much intersection with the nursing curriculum. It included biology, anatomy & physiology, required a year of high school chemistry, and some math. It was anatomy & physiology that the nursing students complained about the most, because there was SO MUCH to learn!

YOu are apparantly white and female, so that makes it tougher for you - not being sexist or racist, only telling the truth - Minorities and men have lower GPA standards. Generally a B average (and a high one at that) is mandatory. YOu could get lucky and get in, but if you are unsuccessful there are always other associate degree nursing programs out there where you can achive your BSN later. And if all else fails and you like medicine, maybe a career in Paramedicine - EMT, Paramedic would do - You don't need as high a GPA and you do a lot more than a run of the mill nurse - don't say you can't due to physcial limitations - I work with women of all shapes and sizes. They can do it and so can you.
