The email was sent from one computer to another computer sitting right beside it in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but it travelled via ARPANET, a network of computers that was the precursor to the Internet.

Good question I would imagine it was over 30 years ago not sure. Maybe then it was called something different but I know in work we had the ability to receive mail via a form of computer or machine as it was called then.
