How do you write a story on FanFiction?

One of my students plagiarized a story on a message board and a fanfiction site as well?

  • Just before the Labor Day holiday I assigned my both my 1st Period and 7th Period sophomore students to write a story which was due today, and told them “Do not plagiarize other people's stories!!!!” When it finally came time to grade the stories they did during the long weekend, I found out that one of the stories that my 1st period students did was both copied from 2 different sites called FanFiction.net and a message board called Luke’s Animatoons and the story he did was entitled “The Hot Pocket Affair” was very similar to a story that a member called JusSonic posted called “Hoagie & Stitch: The Hot Pocket Affair” the story was 11 pages with the whole entire story changed and altered and I read both the original and the assignment he did and gave him an 0, and wrote a paragraph and about how he plagiarized someones hard work and how I caught it. What is the best way to punish him for plagiarizing the story that he used as his own should he apologize the author of the story for using his story as his own for his assignment in my class??

  • Answer:

There are strict rules for punishing plagiarism academically. These can range from a failing grade on the assignment to things like suspension. Depending on the severity of the plagiarism, and also whether or not the original author of the story cares to do anything about it, I would contact the principal of the school. Plagiarism is certainly not something that should ever be overlooked, but if this is the students first offense, I think a zero is probably fair, as well as the student being informed of the consequences of plagiarism not only in school, but in real life as well. A quick side note:FanFiction.net has some pretty cut and dry rules when it comes to their author's stories. It's not as firm as an official copyright for something physically printed, but the stories created are the sole property of their authors.

you may want to consider the fact that your student is JusSonic and that he did not plagiarize at all but merely adapted a story he had already written to your assignment. of course considering the expanse of the internet this is unlikely but it is still a possibility that you should consider. i recommend talking to him in private about his grade and your concerns regarding his plagiarism.

the embarrassment of having a zero on a paper should be enough. Or even better before you pass out your papers talk about plagiarism and give him a look.

You pretty much need to teach this student a lesson without being to hard on him. If he plans on continuing his education at a college and i caught plagiarizing he will be dropped from the class and be sent in front of a panel of professors. If you just give him a zero he might just think of a better way to cheat. I would give him a couple of detentions or even a Saturday detention. Plagiarism is serious in college and if he plans on going to college you need to make sure he is aware of it.

Personally, I'd say the zero is enough. Knowing that his teachers could potentially find out next time he plagiarizes (since you did this time, and it's probably the first time he's ever been caught doing it) and the scare of receiving another zero should hopefully deter him from doing it. If he does get caught again, especially in college, he can be guaranteed a much more severe punishment which he will no doubt deserve.

I say,,, are you so convinced you would lay your life down because you believe he plagiarized? Why not give him a second chance to redeem himself? Perhaps a 22 page paper or see what the child can come up with to settle the matter. The embarrassment will be a memory for the rest of his life. Why not make a memory of a teacher giving a kid a second chance while teaching a valuable lesson at the same time. A teacher changes lives for the better hopefully. Sometimes life lessons are learned the embarrassing way . I say think it over once again ,sure an apology may be necessary, but will it really make any difference? I am sure this child has learned a lesson. Explain to him, he is breaking the law and can endure greater punishment in his adult life for his behavior. So help make a difference in a child life before it gets started.
