What are some pros and cons of being a physical therapist?

A Pros and Cons question, please help?

  • First, I will say I am not looking for this decision to be made for me. I just want a list of what you see as pros and cons to my situation, so I make sure not to miss anything. I will be relying on myself to make the final decision. I am in a Limbo, I need to find a career path for myself and am weighing 3 choices in my head. I know I will have my wife's support on this, which is important to me. I am a big time family man and desire with all my heart to provide for my wife and family. Here are my 3 choices. Please give me a list of what you see to be pros and cons. I sincerely appreciate any help you care to give. 1) Going to Technical Development Center and getting a certificate that will allow me to work as a Physical Therapist Aide or Assistant. It is a 21 week course, but I am not sure I would be completely happy in the field. 2) Going to VC (a local Junior College) and getting a degree in Child Development. I know I would be happy working with Children, but this would take me longer to graduate. 3) Find a job I can advance in and skip school all together. I am not sure how much I like this option, but am considering it.

I like 2 - and you could accomplish it thru nite courses or on-line while you can still work and support your family too.... all in all - remember it's something that you are probably going to spend a good chunk of your time doing - so make sure it's something you enjoy. I work in a lower paying job (my choice), but not once in 11 years have I gotten up and said "eeew. I have to go to work today". that's gotta count for something - @least it does in my book. good luck - whatever you decide to be......

you should pick whatever is going to make you happiest. if you have a chance to go to college then take it. it will serve you better in the long run.

I would do the Child Development. If you go into a job that you hate, then you will be miserable and hard to be around.

Decisions, decisions. You mention your family, so either of the first two choices may be of great value to not only an employer, but to your family as you strive to raise your children. Twenty-one weeks is really not very long to spend in training if it is something that you enjoy and feel fulfilled in doing. I have had a variety of jobs throughout my life and have found that there is always something to dislike about the job, even though you basically enjoy it. Job advancement is nice, but along with advancement comes headaches as well as the possibility of extended work hours. Long hours are not conducive to healthy family life. If you go to the TDC, will you be guaranteed a job placement upon completion of the certificate program? Education is good but, if you are not able to get into the vocation, it may avail you nothing in this case. Whichever choice you make, make certain it is something you feel that you will enjoy and feel accomplishment in doing. If one dislikes their employment it can be rather miserable and most likely short lived, which will bring you back to this point. Best of regards to you.

Either 1 and 2 or 2 and 3. I'm fully in favor of people pursuing their dreams, but you have to keep in mind your family and their needs. The Physical Therapist Aide would be a paycheck while you go parttime to get your Child Development degree. Or find a job and do school parttime. It would take longer... but I think it would be the wisest move because of family concerns. You might also consider that being a Physical Therapist can work with children, so having that certificate while you're working towards having a children's development degree might help you stand out when you have your degree and are looking for work.

Honestly, you have to do whatever will be the best for you and your family, both right now and in the long run. For example, my husband has a great, well paying job with no college whatsoever. he probably makes more than I could right now and i have a degree. But he hates his job. The only reason he is still there is because it pays the bills and allows for me to stay home with the kids. If you can go to school even if it takes a little longer and do something you would enjoy doing, I would definitely do that. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I'd recommend going to the junior college. Yes, the tech development center would be faster, and therefore probably cost less (that's usually how things like this work out). But if you are under 30, the time you put into the junior college would pay off in job satisfaction, and happiness is priceless.

First of all DUMP #3 option. Education always trumps the alternative in the long run. Additionally, if this is a career path for your life choose what will make you HAPPY not what is quickest. The short path can even be revisited at a future date if you aren't happy where you once thought you would be. Working is something you have to do for MANY MANY Years so make it something that matters, is meaningful, brings you joy, pleasure, happiness and personal fulfillment and satisfaction. The quick fix is always..... always the lesser or two evils. You gotta work - BE HAPPY with what you pick. My husband has spent the last 20 years in a job he hates this does NOT EQUAL a satisfying, fulfilling life and has long range consequences in many areas..... A few more years LEARNING, gaining knowledge, wisdom experience in a field you love would always be the best case scenario. You didn't mention your age or your family setting. If you have a young family with kids of course THAT ALONE can alter this decision. MY opinion is based on a young man who is currently FREE TO PURSUE the path he chooses.
