Where would I have to go to obtain a basic food hygiene certificate?

  • I really need to get one. How long does it take and where do I go? Thank you.

  • Answer:

Hi, I did my basic food hygiene learning and exam online, it was easier for me that way as I could learn at my own pace and at a time which suited me. The place where I did my training was called the virtual college. The web address for them is www.food-hygiene-certificate.co.uk you can purchase the course for just £25, it covers all the necessary areas and its in plain simple english, no technical talk. When I did mine you had to do I think four hours online learning before it would allow to take the test, but this is just there to make sure you are doing it properly and not cheating. The basic food hygiene course is very easy you should just breeze through it, even though you may start the course with not a single clue about food or where it should be in the fridge, you will finish a much more knowledgable person. On completion of the exam provided you pass, which I'm sure you will, they will send you a certificate in the post which is recognised by the Royal Institute Of Public Health. Good luck with your studies.

I've got one that I don't use. I can sell you that one. I got it when I was unemployed and they sent me on a training course. It was either 1 or 2 day course then a really easy test at the end of it (with a very low pass mark).

Contact your local Enviromental Health Authority who arrange for the training & issuing of the certificates.

Your county health department should be able to provide you with this answer. I live in PA and and the county I am in offers a 2 day class complete with the test. Good luck.

The qualification you are looking for used to be called Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene which is the basic entrance certificate for the industry. Now they have changed to Level 2 food safety - read this link: http://www.cieh.org.uk/vocation.aspx?id=479 a number of local authorities provide this training. If you do a search for "Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering" on Google, you will find a lot of training providers, public or private. And you can choose one nearer to where you live. Good luck.
