Which is Better TEFL or TESOL certificate?

What type of TEFL/TESOL certificate is needed to teach English in Japan?

  • Hi everyone. I'm graduating this December with a BA in Communication Studies and a minor in Marketing. My fiance lives in Japan, so I'm moving there as soon as I graduate. I'd like to get SOME sort of TEFL certification to boost my resume in a tough job climate, but I'm wondering which I should do. There are 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 hour courses. Are the 20 hour certificates the same as a 120 hour? Meaning, after just completing a 20 hour course, I can put on my resume that I'm "TEFL Certified"? I'd rather just do a 20 hour, but if that means nothing, I'd do a 100 hour online. So, what kind of hourly certificate is needed for Japan? Thanks

  • Answer:

According to the information I have, the most important thing when looking for a teaching job in Japan is a B. A. degree. A TEFL certificate might help, but I don't think anyone will be looking at the number of hours you spent on a course.
