English teachers: how can i improve in english?
-
Hello! I'm a tenth grader and I am really bad at English. I have scored from 49% to 52% in my English exams. I can never seem to improve and I've lost all belief in myself. I can't do anything at all. My English teacher told me that I seem to be falling behind. My younger brother (grade 7) told me that I must have no talent. I want to prove everyone wrong, but in most of my assessments, I have got no higher than a C. Some people have told me that reading helps. I've read some books, but it doesn't really help me with writing. It really hurts to know I have no talent in this subject. Can someone give me some advice as to how to improve?? Finally, I have an English Assignment and it is to construct a short story. I have finished my second draft but nobody would read it because they know it would be bad. Even my brother wouldn't. Can someone offer tips to writing a short story?

Answer:
Hey I loooove English. It was the only class I truly felt I was good at. I got pretty good grades in school (I had high percentages in some classes like: 112%, 102% and 106%) in three diffrent classes. I got an A + on my senior final paper and presentation and I graduated with a 3.4 gpa. I currently go to school for psychology and I'd love to help you anytime. You can email me. I can help you with your paper, and English in general. [email protected]

Actually reading does help you in writing and most importantly in English. I read so much books that even though I'm a freshman, I passed all my English exams with an A and my reading level is well beyond a adults^^ Don't mean to brag though, sorry

Believe it or not, books really do help you with English. Visualizing how things are spelled and the way they are written well defitely help you. You will probably have read more than one book though.

First of all: don't let anyone tell you that you have no talent in something - not your family, and not your teachers. Many of the greatest writers in history were told this as students. Secondly, I'd like to point out that your spelling and grammar is clearly 1000x better than most people on Yahoo Answers! Reading does help, but you have to make sure it's about something you're interested in! And since it can sometimes be hard to motivate yourself, why not pick a book that both you and a friend would be interested in and read it together? Each of you read a few chapters (by yourselves) and then meet up once a week to talk about the book and what you think of it so far. You will get much more out of it this way! Do you have your draft typed up? If you email it to me I'd love to read it over and give you some more tips :) It's just hard to give general tips if I don't actually know what your writing is like.

I am no English teacher but I would try to help. Your information though has not revealed the real problems. Typically, English Exam may consists of composition, comprehension, test on grammar, preposition, etc. For composition for a short story, you should relate to what you have experienced. There must be a good flow of events. Interesting, exciting or unexpected endings would be nice. The sentences should be short and use simple common terms. For comprehension, you must be very good at vocabulary. Read more and when come across new words or phrases, please check the dictionary. It is so much easier these days to use e-dictionary. For grammar, you would need to read English Textbook and understand the usage. There are exercise for you to practise and the answers to check yourself. There is no need to depend on others. Not to forget oral exam or test. Do read out loud to yourself, listen to radio or TV programs. English Language is a beautiful language, learn to appreciate it and you would enjoy learning it.

I'm a history teacher: Reading doesn't help everyone. Ask your English teacher for past English papers to practice on it really helps! Or go to your local (big) bookshop and buy 'Letts' practice papers they have answers and how to answer questions. Practice makes perfect doesn't it? Good luck :)

It's a matter of WHAT you read. If all you read is the comics in the newspapers and People magazine, that's not going to help much. But if you read a Time magazine or an article in the New York Times, then your English will begin to improve

I agree with some of the others: Your spelling is very good. Don't let anyone tell you you are no good at English!
