How do you become an art teacher in the UK?

I want to become a Kindergarten or Art teacher, but I'm torn between the two. I need help deciding!?

  • I am applying for admission to a Faculty of Education, B.Ed Program in the Fall of 2007 and I already hold a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. I am not sure if I should apply to the elementary school fine art teacher program or the primary school program so I can teach Kindergarten. The reason why it's so hard for me to decide is that I really love kindergarten children and when teaching kindergarten you will always be able to do arts and crafts, so being a kindergarten teacher is very appealing to me. On the other hand, being an art teacher is 100% art and that's just great too! The problem is, I have no idea which would create better choice options for me when I graduate and I'm looking for a job. Are Kindergarten Teachers more in demand than art teachers or vice versa? If there are people in either field that can tell me how hard or easy it was to find employment, I would really appreciate your story. Thanks for your help.

i figure a kindergarten teacher would be in higher demand. My school didn't even have an art class, but maybe by now it does. I guess it depends on the schools budget which unfortunately are not big enough sometimes. Hope this was helpful. Good luck.

I am a teacher. I have taught everything except kindergarten. It takes someone really special to spend 8 hours a day with 5 and 6 year olds. You have to be willing to do everything for them and with them. You also have to be able to seperate yourself from saying how cute they are and expect them to learn and follow the rules. If you love that age group, then go for it. We need good kindergarten teachers.

Well, one thing I would take into account is what would you rather? 1) Cleaning up paint-or- 2) Cleaning up puke? :) I guess it would come down to: Would you rather spend your life with toddlers or older kids? Also, do you like simple arts and crafts or more complex ones?

do both! you can take a job working with children and you can give classes at adult ed once a week to adults who you might be able to really use your talents and theirs

It sounds like you need to be an art teacher. Think about it...your B.A. is in Fine Art, not elementary education so you are already biased towards art. Besides, you can't only teach art in kindergaten...there is A LOT more that they do. It will be a little more challenging to find an art teaching job, but you WILL find one...go for what you love, not what is easier to find a job in.

i say what do you like better teaching kids abc's or art but kindergarten is loud and messy and no one really like art the truth is in my middle and elementary school we hate it and despice it but we missed kindergarten and want to go back also kindergarten teachers are jobs you can find more easily

Be an art teacher if you love art! If you become an elem. art teacher then you will still be able to work with the younger kids. You can also work something out with the kinder teachers at your school so you can come in the classrooms to do special art projects with the kids. You may become bored as a kinder teacher since the focus will be on preparing them to read, and write etc. You may not be able to do as much art as a kinder teacher as you are thinking. Also, the art in kindergarten are things like fingerpainting, making macaroni neckklaces and coloring with crayons....that may not be enough to sustain your love of art.
