How to become a foreign language teacher?

What would I need to do to become a foreign language teacher?

  • I'm looking at graduating next year with a bachelor's in International Affairs with a concentration in either Spanish or Anthropology (I haven't decided yet but whichever I do not choose as a concentration I will minor in). I will have a minor in French as well, and at least 4 semesters of Mandarin. I have not taken any education courses, as I had never seriously considered teaching as a career until just recently. What would I need to do in order to teach foreign language at the highschool level? I'm fluent in Spanish and proficient in French (though I should be fluent by graduation).

  • Answer:

You would need to take the courses required for teacher certification in your state, student teach and pass Praxis 1 and Praxis 2. You could probably do this by spending an extra year in college, or you could earn a Master of Arts in Teachin while becoming certified. I'd suggest that you talk with someone in the education department at the school you are currently attending.
