What is it like to teach high school English?

Can you teach English in a foreign country after high school?

  • So, I'm a senior in high school, and I'm considering taking a gap year before college. But, I want to do something exciting and adventurous, instead of sitting on my a$$. My friend is teaching English in Japan for a year, and he said it was pretty easy, all they required was a passport and a college degree for anything. I was wondering, is there are way to teach English in a foreign country (preferably Japan or South Korea) before you go to college? Because I plan to go to a college that has a strong internship program, and I fear I will already have a job in the industry I plan to go into before I can get the chance to teach English for a year. Help?

  • Answer:

No, they don't let high school students (or graduates, there's no difference) be teachers. Honestly how are you qualified for teaching? I know you're just trying to copy your friend, but why don't you actually look into gap year programs? There's a ton of them all over the world and they keep you busy. I took two programs, one helping out in Ghana (Africa in case you aren't familiar) and another practicing my arts in Italy. They set everything up for you, but you do have to already be accepted into a college to apply.

No. Are any of your teachers only high school graduates? I do not think so. Korea and Japan have good educational systems that require a degree in the language.

no, you will need a degree. And not one in anything like your friend says

flex

Nope, you would need all sorts of certifications, blah blah blah. Maybe your friend is doing it informally - surprisingly there are a lot of people who would pay "decent" money just to be taught some semblance of english - I knew this person who taught Koreans english in whatever starbucks branch using Archie Comics xD.

You will need a degree to get a work visa. If you were from the Uk, you could have got a working holiday visa, but US citizens can't get those, so your plan stops there.
