What steps do I need to take to become a teacher?

  • I've decided that I am sick of the corporate world, I've had too many jobs that I've hated and have been totally unhappy at. I've come to the realization that teaching would be a rewarding career for me and something that I would love doing and that would make me happy. However, I have a B.A. in Political Science...so how would I go about becoming a teacher, and could I teach something like History? Do I need to take more undergraduate courses? Do I need to get a Master's in Education? I live in Pennsylvania.

    Your BA gets you in the door of a teaching certification class, which can take as long as one year to complete. You need to know which age group you want to teach. You can always work toward your masters as you teach. Good luck.

You need to seek the advice of any of the many education institutions in Pennsylvania. Counselors should be able to answer all or most of your questions.

Your B.A. will help you. Most likely you will have to enroll in a university and then enroll in their college of education. I know in my college of ed, it is at least three semesters. Look into your state department of education, some states will pay for your Master's in education as long as you commit to teach in that state for a certain number of years. I hope you do become a teacher, the pay is lousy but it is a very rewarding profession!!

it differs by start but you usually need some type of license. you dont need a license to teach at private schools tho
