What steps do I need to take to become a teacher?

  • I have a Bachelor's in political science, but the degree hasn't really done much for me, and I'd like to teach, maybe History, or maybe foreign language as I am fluent in Italian and somewhat proficient in Spanish, but what do I need to do to become a teacher. Do I need to get a Master's in Education? Is that even possible with my undergraduate degree, I have no education credits at all.

You do not need a masters in education just pass the teaching certification tests in the state in which you live, if you live in my you need a masters, you don't need any education credits at all that I know of, I am applying for the master's program and graduated with a degree in literature

You need a PGCE, which is a one year course. You will get some financial assistance from the government in the form of a bursary. You need to show you have experience with the age range you want to teach (do a couple of days volunteering in a school) and a good subject knowledge. The interview is quite hard as it is usually for a whole day but it's worth it! Look on this website www.gttr.ac.uk/ You will find detailed requirements for each institution and where still have vacancies for 2008/9. Good luck!
