How do I become a FIDE Master?

How can I become a teacher without an education degree? Is it possible to get a Master's degree funded? ?

  • I'm in school getting my bachelor's degree right now in philosophy. But, I'm pretty sure I want to become a high school teacher eventually. So, I've heard of some programs where you can teach for two years and simultaneously work on a master's degree in Education. I don't HAVE to have the master's, I just want to become a high school teacher (in either history/social studies or English). Can anyone give me some advice?

HOW to become a Teacher Read this: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos069.htm The traditional route to becoming a public school teacher involves completing a bachelor’s degree from a teacher education program and then obtaining a license. However, most States now offer alternative routes to licensure for those who have a college degree in other fields. Private school teachers do not have to be licensed but still need a bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree may not be needed by preschool teachers and vocational education teachers, who need experience in their field rather than a specific degree. You'll need a BS in Education or whatever grade/subject you want to teach. That's a 4-year degree. Pros: You'll never be bored. You get to see children improve at something. You can make your job better by how much you put into it. You have creative control over how you teach. You get summers off. You get 2 weeks off at Christmas. You get 1 week off in the Spring. You'll get insurance and salary enough to live on your own. You will learn how to be an adult. You will learn how to set boundaries and take care of yourself. Cons: It's VERY demanding emotionally, and mentally. Depending on the age you teach, kids will eat you alive if you don't know how to handle yourself. You'll need to spend some of your own money for supplies. You won't earn enough to buy a home unless you marry someone who also has a full-time, good-paying job. Unlike many of your friends who work in offices, you barely have enough time to pee, or make a phone call.

First, check with your state on the requirements to becoming a teacher. Even though you are obtaining a BA in another field, there are some educational courses you will need to take. Additionally, many states require that you pass a state exam and an exam in your course field. Many states also require that you "student teach", that means you will work under a certified teacher in the classroom and allow him/her to assist you as you teach for a period of time. Teaching is a very honorable field. I believe that people are 'called' to teach. You may have a great knowledge about your subject area, but you are going to be dealing with young people and they come with imperfect backpacks. Many of them are abused, scorned, orphans, rich, poor, neglected, in gangs, ADD, ADHD, ODC and many other terms. You have to come with an abundance of love and concern for their welfare and their educational success. You will become their mother, father, preacher, doctor, counselor and everything else that they need. I admire your desire to teach and wish you the best of luck.
