Would like to be a Tap teacher. help!?

  • I Live in the UK and have been Tap dancing since i was 5, I am currently at a GRADE 6. Im 18 very nearly 19 years old and have decided that i would like to go into teaching Tap dance. The only thing is that i do not know how to go about this?? I have tried looking online for any places- colleges/universities, that give you a dance teaching degree in Tap but i cant seem to find any information. I have heard of I.S.T.D but i am also not sure what this qualification means :S i would really love to be a tap teacher i just don't know where to go from here? Your help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  • Answer:

ISTD stands for "Imperial Society Teachers of Dance" and they work primarily with ballroom accrediation as well as certification. Check with your local universities and "Tap Dance" usually falls under "Modern Dance". Since you have been taking lessons for such a long time why not talk with your coach and see if you can assist with classes and then work your way into a formal teaching role. There is really no need for a certification to be a teacher of dance as experience means a lot more than a piece of paper.
