Does any one know of special grants for enrolled teacher candidates in California?

Should I honestly be a high school teacher? P.E. & ENGLISH TEACHERS PLEASE HELP!?

  • I'm completely overwhelmed and confused about what I should do with my life. I originally wanted to be a pediatrician. However, I attended a Junior College and tried taking the medical prerequisites and just hated it. I CANNOT stand taking all of those chemistry courses and they truly depress me. I feel like I'm just not cut out to take those classes, they do not interest me, I have to retake them constantly because I fail them EVEN with help of a tutor, studying, etc. Anyways, I just graduated from the Jr. College and am currently enrolled in a California State University. I decided that I really want to be a high school teacher. I would absolutely LOVE being a P.E. teacher, but am currently an English and P.E. major to teach both. I'm only double majoring in both because I heard it's easier to get employed if you teach more than one subject. I know that I can wake up everyday happy doing only teaching Phys. Ed. and love my job. However, everybody keeps telling me that in California, there's all these budget cuts and P.E. is always one the first to get cut and those teachers get laid off. I also hear that they don't make anything. I don't mind not having a huge paycheck, I'm doing it because I love it, want to make a difference, and to be an inspiration. Should I become just a P.E. teacher? Or just suck it up and teach both for employment. Or should I honestly just find another career. Please help me. Thank you.

Hello Overwhelmed! We have all gone through this stage (or will be) of maturing. Loving to be something is 'childish'. Becoming a teacher requires learning how to teach. You need to attend a four teacher's college and acquire a teacher's certification. You will also need to complete subject mastery courses. Teaching is a wonderful job but for many it is a drag. Few new teachers ever make it past three years. Don't listen to me or the others, take some time and talk with employed teachers, learning what is all involved in a teaching career.

There are very few jobs in either PE or English in CA right now. Math or a science would be better. However, lots of areas hire coaches on separate budgets, so you could make money that way until a job comes up. English and PE are not a great combination. PE teachers often deal with health science or other state requirements, so check into that. Another area in which there are jobs is special ed. You might investigate psychomotor or special needs PE as well as regular PE. As for English, don't do it if you don't love it because you won't do the students any good. If you do continue with English, look into ESL certification because most schools need that kind of training.
