Is it so important to prepare revision papers for the students?

Tutoring- Not getting any students :(?

  • Note: I live in Sydney , Australia I have been advertising maths tutoring for about 1.5years and in that whole period I have only got ONE 1hr lesson. It's so bloody annoying. I here so many stories about their being so much demand for math tutors, but I am certainly not seeing any of this demand :( For the first six months I was charging $20/hr and have a "first lesson free" discount. That got absolutely no one, I did not get any calls at all :( . I tried to do free lessons so I could build my reputation , but no one even gave me a chance :|. Then I raised the price to $25/hr for the next year. Basically, if I am not getting any students then I might as well not get students with a high rate. Atleast I am making the most out of the 1 student I get per year. About six months ago I got one 1hr lesson , which was a very quick revision of high school maths for a university student. Hardly worth it. Then about 1month ago I said that I could help people with some university subjects. I have gotten high distinctions for about 7 university subjects , so I thought I would add them to the list. Thinking I might actually get some people to tutor. Just a few days ago I got some emails from a university student, and he wanted two 2hr sessions to help him prepare for this upcoming university tests. Yippe! That was the most work I have got in 18months. I need to find a place/way so I can get a reasonable amount of tutoring hours every week, instead of just the odd "1hr catch up" every blue moon. I have looked for tutoring companies. Most of them are atleast 1hour away from where I live , and I live very close to the city (I do not live in a remote country town, I live on the coast!). I am just really frustrated. I have been working at a McDonalds store for like 5years , I just turned 20years old and I have basically been taken off the roster. I am very good with mathematics, I hear about all this demand for maths tutors and I am wondering why I can't get any work :(.

I began tutoring last May, when I came home from my freshman year of college for the summer. My mom and a math teacher I had in elementary school had been talking, and the teacher said that two of her students' parents had approached her earlier in the year about a tutor for the summer. My mom told me, and I talked to my teacher. When one of the parents emailed her again, she gave them my information, and the mother then contacted me, and we set up a meeting between the parents, the teacher, and myself to discuss what we could spend the summer doing and what the child needed to work on. Another teacher at my school approached my mom about me tutoring, and she then gave the mother of a student of hers my name and information, and that mother also contacted me (for four of her children, as one was recommended for summer school, and the others could use the extra help, too). This coming summer, I hope to have more students to tutor, and in order to do so, I plan to email or contact some teachers I had in elementary school and let them know that I will be available to tutor over the summer and give them other information (such as name, number, email, rate) so if anyone asks them about it, they can just pass along my information quickly. Try talking to teachers at schools nearby, whether it is an elementary school, secondary school, or college. Just talk to teachers of students in the age range you are willing to tutor, and they can either pass your information along, or they can possibly recommend tutoring for some students if they do that.

I hear you. I am a retired math teacher and have been tutoring FOR FREE at the local library. Since October, the only two who have shown up are a German exchange student and a fifth grader who wants me to read to her.

Rethink where and how you advertise. Maybe you aren't reaching the right people in the right way. And let McDonald's know you would like a job as an assistant manager. Tell them you know first-hand what the work is about, and you're good with numbers. If they tell you all the calculations are done by computers, tell them that it doesn't mean that everyone will understand the results and know what managerial actions to take, and you do.

If I were you, I'd work towards getting a degree in mathematics education. It'll look better as tutor to have a degree. After that you could consider becoming a teacher. You could also take an entrepreneur route where you could open up an online tutoring website by teachers for students, and you could start it at the school you work at and see how that goes. I hope this helps.

I know someone that had considered being a math tutor as a way to make money (the person does not have a degree in math, and had been asked to tutor students in the school). But the problem was that the school system offered free tutoring after school. So there was no way to make money as a tutor. That could be whats going on in your area. I don't know if your school system has school all year. But if it doesn't you might want to try making flyers that say you can tutor students during the summer to help them retain what they learn and help them to the next math level to get a good start for the next school semester. Leave them at libraries, post them in stories, leave with friends to pass out to to their friends with children. In some areas it is hard to have a tutoring business. You can also go to the Wyzant website (a popular online tutoring service) and question them to see if the company has expanded to your area. I hope these suggestions will help.
