What is EC?

So what is home ec like, teachers?

• I never had the chance to take home ec. I have a background in Culinary and I was thinking of becoming a teacher. What are the requirements for teaching home ec. (how is it spelled?) and if you meet the requirements, do you get to choose what classes you take?

  Personally, I liked Home Economics when I was in Junior High School and went on to major in this course of study. However I did not go into the teaching field I was more in the vein of counseling and it wasn't in the school system. So to answer your question, the Home Economic field has changed over the years. First, the name of it has changed from Home Ec to Human Ecology to Family and Consumer Sciences. Second, it should show in your college catalog direction in the field you would like to go into. If it is the teaching aspect of it then you will also have to take education, certification, licensing courses and the psychology of teaching children. If you go into the social work aspect of it, you will have to also get your license and certification which is also additional courses. The business and management will probably require a minor in administration. The HEC cirriculum is very diversified and if no one else tells you, what I went through was someone saying to me that it would have been better that I concentrated in one thing rather than me being diverse in so many things. My academic advisor didn't tell me this. One of the first jobs that I went for after graduation did.
