What does an English major do?

What to major in to be an english teacher for high school teacher?

  • I want to be an English teacher but i don't know what to major in, English composition or creative writing? What would help me to be a better writer because i want to have the English teacher as my day job and write in my free time so i want to have something to help me write novels. Also, do you major in education as well as what you want to teach or do you just major in what you want to teach? What are some of the best schools for english teachers around/in michigan?

  • Answer:

Well, you need to see the teaching requirements for the state of Michigan if you want to teach in that state. In New York you need your bachelors AND master's degree to teach. You can major in any type of English that you find interesting. Either get your bachelors in creative writing and your master's in education. Or, you can get your bachelors in teaching english and then get your master's in creative writing. It's up to you and what you find the most interesting.

You will need to major in Education (secondary), and minor in English. That's how it is at my school. I'm going to become an English teacher as well. But, some you have to major in Education and English. And minoring in English Composition is way more better.
