What are some volunteer opportunities in the bay area?

What kind of volunteer opportunities are there for working with children without homes/family or in a daycare?

• I guess you wouldn't call them orphanages anymore...I would love to visit a shelter for children without families and volunteer a few hours a week. Would I get to go in and spend time with the children in the facility or would I have one child to spend time with and write to and etc? Would I call an adoption center to find out about opportunities in my area? It would need to be in close proximity because I don't have a car and will need to take a bus. I'm 19 and am pursuing an Elementary Education degree, though I may have a one year break because of money... If this wouldn't work, I would volunteer in a day care or camp. I'm sure though that at a day camp, they require you to become an employee and part of the reason I'm only volunteering is that I don't have much of a resume and need references. Do daycares and day camps take volunteers or must you work as an employee? I'm in the bay area of California if anyone has anything.

  Hi, I just looked up some opportunities for you on volunteermatch.org. It seems that there is a high need for people to work with children. You can help children with special needs, hospital residents, and those in homeless shelters. I'll put up the link for you. (hope this helps)
