What are some ideas for a presentation?

Have any ideas on what I can do with my presentation to make it interesting?

  • I am a graduate student enrolled in an advanced human development class. As part of a group, I have to do a 15 minute (give or take) presentation on Anorexia. I have a "case study" I will need to use and other than that, I have absolutely free reign. I don't want to just stand up there and read to them. They have already read the case themselves so they are already familiar with the material and I am not introducing it to them for the first time.I thought I might use some kind of handout just to keep them from staring at me but what else? The electronic equipment in the room is pretty unreliable so we are opting not to bother with any Power Point presentaion or use any video clips.I really don't like public speaking with my fellow graduate students as my audience so I am nervous. It is worth 100 points and I don't want to lose my A over this project. Any ideas would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

Handouts are always a good thing and if you are not doing a media base presentation then then perhaps you can use maybe a poster or flip chart that you can write a few bullet points on and have next to you. If you had available to you a largish mirror, that might be a useful "prop". A flexi- mirror (like the shatter proof ones would be ideal) would be better, if not pictures of a woman looking into a mirror on the hand out. The reason why I say this is because I remember doing some counselling with an acknowledge anorexic and it really struck me when she said that when she looked in the mirror, everything was magnified. Every imperfection. She really saw herself as distorted and fat, physically SAW that, so the impact of challenging people with a visual image of an actual view of a reflect and then perhaps a distorted photoshopped version of the image might be a good point to challenge them with and shake people out of clinical dissection of the condition. Other things to do is to ask people in the room if there was something about them that they would like to change or "improve", because most people would respond yes, or to put it as a questionnaire on a hand out, just a small one. Questions like, if you had unlimited funds, would you consider cosmetic surgery. Would you like to lose weight? Do you feel perfectly comfortable with your body? and so on, to prove the point that body image is a common issue, that most've share the traits involved in anorexia to a lesser degree. The best presentations get the listeners involved and empathising with the subject matter so you can point out the similarities to the norm, and then focus in on the differences. Hope that helps!
