How do I become a teacher in the UK?

How does a person become an advanced skills teacher in the UK? Where do you apply?

  • Information that would be useful include the websites that you can visit; where you can apply to become an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST); and the criteria to become an AST!

  • Answer:

I assume you are already qualified as a classroom teacher? If so the process of becoming an AST is through your current school. Most schools actually have meetings with staff who wish to go for it annually. You are given the info and plenty of notice to put together your portfolio together - then an external examiner comes in to assess you - this includes examining your documentation and observing lessons. For your portfolio you need to give extensive evidence of the following 1) Results and outcomes 2) Subject knowledge and specialist knowledge 3) Ability to plan 4) Ability to teach, manage pupils and maintain discipline 5) Ability to evaluate and assess 6) Ability to advise and support other teachers Good luck with it - more info should be on the gov education website.

You tend to be recommended and financed by your school. Many schools no longer encourage this because they fork out the cash then lose the teacher quickly. Mind you the advanced skills teachers I have encountered tend to be thick and ignorant of real teaching and can only spout the most recent platitudes some dunce in central government has come up with for the training course

You can find information about becoming an AST through the GTC website. I'm fairly sure that vacancies are advertised through the LEA and you apply whilst retaining your current teaching position. I know I've seen positions advertised through our LEA bulletins when published so that'd be the best place to start vacancies wise.

Depends on which Local Authority you are in. The AST scheme was (IMMHO) the only good thing the LAbour party put in place. Unfortunately it is mostly discontinued - I ask Hants (3 years ago ) how many ASTs they had - after an initial - what's an AST I got a reply some 2 months later that they had two on their books. TWO for the whole of Hants. Good luck. Wayne
