What exactly is the purpose of public education?

• Universities vary so I won't get in to that - it's obviously for specialization in a field or multiple fields. But public school (grade, middle, and high school) doesn't teach finances, it doesn't teach nutrition in depth, it doesn't teach you how to do your taxes, it doesn't require PE anymore, and most importantly, it doesn't teach you anything job related besides English; reading and writing... so what's the point? a social get-together while parents are at work? I got gas the other day, and the clerk joked that it was the first time he used math from grade school! that's really pathetic, why is school compulsory if they don't teach you anything useful?

  Thomas Jefferson stated that public education was essential for democracy to work. It depends on an educated electorate. He pushed for laws that mandated school attendance. He also founded the University of VA. Note that the electoral college is only used for the presidential election and was started before Thomas Jefferson became president. All state and local elections are by popular vote. You are over generalizing to say that the system is broken. You again over generalize when you say that school doesn't teach anything useful. Check your local school district website for the curriculum and read it, all the way from Kindergarten through grade twelve. They should at least have a summary of the objectives taught at each grade level. Then reflect on its relevance.
