computers are used to put sound effect of songs that couldnt be done before e.g. reverb you can double track things, record different parts of songs at different types, loop things so they dont have to be played all the way through.. add samples from different songs.. recording on computers is a lot easier than however the f*ck they used to do it.. maaajorly influenced pop especially in the 80's onwards, they have so much studio effects.. especially kylie.. and it was like reverb-mania e.g. the smiths.. that shiz has carried on to now..
