Where is the best place to look for a job teaching in new york city?

  • i just graduated from college and now i am certified to teach 7-12 in social studies/history. i currently live in pittsburgh, pa, but i am planning on moving to nyc this summer. where is the best place to find job openings for teachers? where can i find information about teaching in nyc? salary? best schools? please, any tips would be soooo helpful - im lost!

    Congratulations on finishing collge! NYC is an exciting place to start your teaching career. There are (usually) lots of openings in the city, but jobs can be harder to find in upstate New York and in the outer suburbs. Job openings-- if you know anyone in NY, talk to them and ask which schoolsare the best. Or, do as your doing now-- ask for the best schools online. Once you have 10-12 schools you'd like to teach at, fill out your applications and send application packets (resume, cover letter, certification, college transcripts, etc.) The KEY is to not rely on Human Resources to call you. Write a letter to the PRINCIPALS of the schools you want to work at. Send them a letter expressing your interest and enclose a resume. Since principals usually have direct control over who is hired, they can request your paperwork from Human Resources when it comes time to hire. If you don't do this, then HR will send the principal only a FEW of the candidates' paperwork when it omes time to hire. You want to be SURE the principal knows who you are, so communicate directly with him/her. Here's a good eBook that may help you-- it has lots of information about where to find teaching jobs, how to apply, teacher interview tips, common teaching interview questions and answers, and lots of stuff like that. The easiest place to look is the website called: www.nyc.gov. I did the search form the yahoo page> I entered the website as thus. www.nyc.gov Then came up a list of all the choices. choose #1 which says city of New York that opens up to The NYC home page in the left had corner click on where it says city agencies then scroll down the agencies which are listed in alphabetical order and click on Education, Dept of that will bring you to the website for the New York city public school system which is the largest employer of teachers in all of New York City. You can find inofrmation on how to leave a reusme by e-mail to the dept of education and about other hiring information. I hope this is of help to you. You can also find a list of all the Junior high schools and high schools in all the five boroughs of New York city (Bronx Brooklyn queens Manhattan and Staten Island and locations of schools student population size and attendance and reading levels and academic performances etc. I wish you the best of luck and there always seems to be a need for more teachers here as the student population keeps on growing.
