What do you major in to become a teacher?

What major / bachlor do I need from San Jose State to become an Elementary School teacher?

• About 2 weeks ago I realized that I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. Right now I am at a community college where I have already taken most of my GEs. I thought that in order to become a teacher I would need a Child Development major and then transfer to SJSU and get my BA in Child Development, Preparation for Teaching (multiple subjects). I also planned on first getting my AA because I thought that would be a safe thing to do. Today I went to the Transfer Center and I was told that Liberal Studies is the major I need to have. This has really confused me. So now I have to make a brand new EdPlan. I went on to Assist.org so I can see what classes I need to transfer but I see that there is another Liberal Studies major named “Liberal Studies, Preparation for Teaching, (Multiple Subjects)”. I don’t know which one is right. Please help me.

Any California state college/university would be following the requirements for a credential in the state of California. Schools may vary as to what they accept for transfer from a community college. You should go directly to San Jose State to find that out. Community college is often a matter of fulfilling basic requirements that are taken by freshmen and sophomores in university. The sooner you transfer to a college/univ. with an education department the more likely you are to avoid having to take unnecessary courses. This also would prevent you from being affected by changes that the state dept. of education might come up with in the future. That has happened often in the past.
