Are text books necessary when studying?

Why am i so stupid? i read my text books, go over my notes, and i still dont know anything?

  • i signed up for college, 4 classes. i pay attention in all he classes, i take notes, i do my homework, and I STILL cant remember anything i've studied. we had a math pop quiz today, and i didnt get any of the 10 questions right. i am really starting to worry. i dropped one of my classes, because i was struggeling, to studying for all the classes at once, and now i want to drop my math class too, i just am not learning anything. my math teacher goes really fast, he teaches us something new everyday., he spends 5 minutes teaching us how to do a problem, then we are supposed to knwo what we are doing.. so if i quit another class, i will be put on probabtion from my financial pel grant. so i just dont know what to do. i just feel SO stupid, why am I so stupid? I try so hard to study, i try so hard, i read all my text books, and i just dont know anything. :(

I know that feeling! But you are most certainly not stupid! You just need to find a way to acknowledge the information. Obviously your studying styles aren't working for you, so try different approaches to study this information. If you're struggling with learning Math, the Professor, I'm sure, is willing to help you. And if not, I'm sure they have the TA (Teacher's Assistant) to help you as well. The professor's are not only there to stand up in front of the class, you need to make an effort (besides studying) in order to learn. They have Office Hours, and you can set up appointments with the professor if you're struggling. Professor's are willing to help as long as your taking that opportunity, and grasp for that help. I'll be honest, I don't like going to my professor's to help, but if I want to pass the class, and do what I can to achieve a good score in that class; I need to make that effort. So, don't be unwilling to explain to anyone, even your professor's, that you're struggling in their class. They're 100% willing to help. When going over your notes make, like I am in my anatomy class, I split my notes into two sections. One for the actual power point slide notes, and then I go home, and read over these notes, and in the second column I write a "translation" or something that will help me remember or learn the information. I really hope that helps, good luck in your future College endeavors!

One of two things could be happening here. 1) You could be reviewing the material not enough. Repetition is the key to learning. One application I find useful for studying is Genius 2) Instead of being a more materialistic learner, where you have to take notes and read from a book, you could be a more auditory learner. *Another good thing to remember is look over your homework problems before a quiz or test - ESPECIALLY THE ONES YOU DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE FIRST TIME AROUND. If you need to, write out problems on a separate sheet of paper and work on them a second time. That way it stays in your head better. Hope his helps!
