What jobs are typically suited for an english major?

I can't decide what I want to teach: English Abroad vs. At Home?

  • I'm going to just dive into this: I can't decide if I want to do ESL (Teaching English to non-English speakers) abroad, or if I would be better suited to earn a Ph.D here and teach creative writing in a university. Unlike other jobs interests, I can't just pop over to another country and watch how ESL works. The biggest thing holding me back is fear of failure, loneliness, and self-doubt. Then again, I love culture a lot. I've had friends from other countries and I really really enjoy helping them figure out how to say things. Teaching creative writing here would require a Ph.D. I have no problem earning a Ph.D but it IS more schooling time and more debt. I've also heard it's super competitive. What appeals to me about this is my own enjoyment of creativity in writing. I am currently a senior at my university, but I will be graduating a little late (December). I feel like I'm on a very short time-line to figure all of this out. [*stressed*] I apologize for how the question has jumped around a lot, but I felt that if I didn't make it short-and-to-the-point you'd be reading a paper instead.

  • Answer:

A GOOD ESL course takes at least a year. However, advanced degrees are respected overseas, and if you had the doctorate you might be able to teach at a branch of an American university overseas, which would allow you to explore at your own pace. However, your application would look better if you were fluent in a second language.

Your fear of failure, lonliness and self-doubt won't go away by staying close to home and playing it safely. Nothing broadens one like travel, exposure other cultures and developing self-assurance far from the people and influences that put you where you are now. Fly, bird, and return with personal richness beyond your dreams

You could anyway start by doing an ESL course. They're not long - a few weeks. Then get some teaching practice in a country not too far from yours, or even in a college in your own country. That might help you make up your mind. The Ph.D. can wait another year or more, can't it?
