Are preschool teachers in demand in Canada?

Will there be a demand for Elementary School Teachers in the future? **Ten Points**?

  • Hi, I'm 15 now and I'm looking into becoming an Elementary teacher, like JK-6. I'm going to take a concurrent program but I know that it's difficult to get a job teaching nowadays. Will there be a demand for teachers in the near-ish future? I live in Canada by the way :) Thanks in advance. Any additional advice would be great :P

  • Answer:

No. The natural birth rate in Canada is 1.23 or so. Canada's population would be decreasing by about 90,000 people per year -- if not for immigration. Most of this is at the low end and the average age of Canadians continues to increase. There is little likelihood that Canadian families will start having significantly more children -- birth control, higher education for women, women in the job market, etc. isn't going away. Teachers are also unionized and so have seniority in most cases. There are a lot of unemployed teachers out there and it will take a generation for significant numbers to retire. Universities are still graduating fairly high numbers of people with education degrees. Baring remote areas where people don't want to work, some high school trades, ESL or special needs teachers, its a rather bleak prospect for most of them.
