How to become a foreign language teacher?

If i want to become a foreign language teacher should i major in foreign language or education?

  • So i want to become a foreign language teacher but i'm not really decided on what language yet. So i was wondering, should i major in foreign language or education? Later on, i would hopefully like to work with the cia and for that i need a bachelor's degree in foreign language. So what should i do?

    In the US you usually major in language educations such as Spanish Education. In most states a degree in Spanish does not qualify you for teaching public school. With the cut backs in education many schools in my area have laid-off all of the teachers in languages other than Spanish.

If you major in education, then that really narrows down your options later on... I would definitely recommend that you stick to the languages since you will be able to use this skill in so many different ways even if you decide against the teaching route. I am a Primary School Teacher (Elementary) in the UK, and I specialised (Majored I suppose... kind of...) in French as part of my teacher training. I did a French degree first, then went on to do teaching, as, although I was pretty set on teaching, I wanted something to fall back on. If I had done a teaching degree, and then decided I didn't enjoy teaching, then I would have had to start from scratch, which I didn't like the sound of!! Go for whichever major you think will give you the best start, it's important to look at the big picture here I think...!! Good luck, whatever you decide!!

At my university, you can either major in Spanish and minor in education to get a bachelor's degree with teacher licensure, or you can major in Spanish, and then take a 5th year of education courses to get an M.A. T. Your starting salary is higher with a master's.
