Teacher salary with Master of Arts in Teaching?
-
I am going into this program its 18 credits to obtain my Master in Arts in Teaching.. How much more do teachers make $$ who have this as opposed to just having a bachelors and teachers license. Also if I would like to teach without a license what options do I have. Besides spending 6-12 months getting a license or this degree what options are available?..is it that hard to teach with just a bachelors degree in a revelent field? What would I need to become principal or assistant principal? would this degree suffice?

Answer:
You cannot teach in a public school system without a License. It is required as stated in the NCLB (which you should know if you're going into teaching...) I've been doing a lot of research on Masters Degree vs Bachelors with License, because I'm currently making this decsion myself. So far, I have found that getting a Masters degree will not help you to get hired, at least not right now with this economy. I have spoken to many teachers and principles and they have all advised me not to get a masters. The reasoning is that getting a Masters degree will make you more expensive to hire and schools will not be able to afford you. There are so many budget cuts going on right now that schools are avoiding people with Master degrees because they can't afford to hire them. I know a good handful of teachers with Master degrees that have recently been laid off. However, this all depends on what your teaching and where. I am in Early Childhood Education. If you are in Sciences, Math, or Special education, then a Masters is in your interest. Other than that, don't bother. Just get a license and go from there. You can always go back for your Masters later if you really need it. I've also done a lot of job hunting for teaching positions of any kind for all over the country. It's looking pretty bleak. I have not found one job that required a Masters. The highest paying job I found so far was $39,000, and that was a reading specialist in a Washington D.C. Charter School. Other options would be Teach for America. If you're accepted, they train you to be a teacher in 3 months over the summer then you start teaching in August. It's a 2 year commitment where you would be teaching is low income area. It's a very competitive program though, so it's hard to get in. To be a principle you would need a Masters degree in School Administration or something related.

In most areas teacher's salaries are determined by both years of experience and education level. Salary levels vary by state/province/country. Most public school boards require a teacher's licence to teach. You need to talk to your local department of education. They can tell you the rules and salary scales.
