How to NOT PAY for my masters degree?

Average starting teacher pay with a Bachelors vs a Masters degree in FL?

  • Subject is english. Was wondering if its actually worth waiting about 3 more years and going for a Masters when you already owe over 35k from your Bachelor's and are already on your 30s? By the way.. this is an assumption for around 2016..

  • Answer:

For Broward County, FL: as of 2008 starting teachers with a bachelors - 38,500 starting teachers with a masters - 42,150 Each county is different and Broward is one of the highest paid in the state. Broward also helps current teachers financially to get their Masters.

It varies according to your years of experience, but generally, you can expect to make between $5,000 and $7,000 more per year if you hold a master's degree. If you're worried about paying back student loans, I would go ahead and try to find a teaching job now. In many cases, school districts will pay for you to take graduate classes towards a master's degree as part of your allowance for professional development. This also allows you to make sure you really want to teach before you spend even more money and time pursuing an advanced degree. I would only go to grad school immediately if I had trouble finding a teaching job. My logic here is based on 2 things: (1) An advanced degree makes you more marketable, and (2) If you're not going to be weighted down with a full-time teaching job, you might as well make the most of it by pursuing a higher degree.

I found some interesting and CURRENT figures from Clay County, Florida. Like the poster above me said, the years of experience will be a determining factor in the salary but oddly, not as big a difference as I would have thought. For example, a new teacher (with a Bachelors Degree) with no experience would have a starting salary of $37,500 for 2007-2008. Now, for the first 2 years of experience, the teacher would earn an extra $100/year. Not til around year 8-9 would the difference be $500/year. A teacher with a Master's Degree's base salary is $2000 more. That is the salary differential for a Master's degree is $2000. That being said, you are better off trying to find a job immediately then letting the school board help you with the cost of obtained your Master's. Best of Luck.
