Are math teachers in high/ higher demand than other teachers?

Are math teachers still in demand in CA?

  • I have a BA but not in math and i have experience teaching for LAUSD for 7 years . i was wandering if in this economy will it pay off if i take the extra math core classes and go for the math credential? will i have many options for employment? plz only california residents in teaching respond.

  • Answer:

Yes! Math and science teacher are still in high demand and there are a lot of grants and scholarships out there for math and science teacher candidates. If you google Robert Noyce Scholarship Program you can find a number of California State University campuses who offer up to $10,000 a year for two years to people who want to be math teachers. My brother became a high school teacher for the Santa Ana district three years ago. He was immediately put on a fast track career path, became department chair within two years and makes $80,000 a year. With recent budget cuts there were a number of teachers at his school that were laid off, but none of the math and science teachers were let go.
