How do I become an English Teacher?

I want to become a teacher, mainly in the subjects of art or english, how do i do that?

  • Im nearly 19 and on a Health + social care course at college (level 3) and im getting full distinctions, but I have not applied to uni as I wanted to stay at home and not get into debt yet. I love art and english, and in my GCSEs i got an A and B, but where do i go from here to become a teacher? I have done placement in a nursery recently and loved the children, but im very shy and the other staff marked me down because of that, and it upset me a lot, but what skills and qualifications will i need to have to become an art or english teacher for primary school children? What do i do after this course? Thank you!

To gain experience without a degree, call your local school district, or look them up on the internet. Ask them if they are accepting applications for substitute teachers. You wont' always get into the grades you want, or subjects, but you don't have to take the assignments if you don't want to. Take the ones you want, get paid, get experience. Your resume will look much better with experience on it. You need to get over the "shy" thing, or standing in front of a room full of people will be a liability for your career. Kind of like wanting to be a capenter but afraid of wood, LOL. Good luck

English youd need to major in elementary education[ you can only teach english.if you major in middle childhood education or secondary.education] to be an art teacher you need to major.in Art education. Both take four years to complete and the field is very very difficult as so many teachers are fighting to keep their jobs. Many teachers are losing their jobs due to budget cuts and this economy. I have a degree in English and secondary.education and I just lost my job due to hugh budget cuts

Just Give Me A Reason

Ask a career counselor at the college. Remember, though, that primary teachers usually have to teach all the basic subjects to their own class. Some schools hire art teachers, but most primary schools don't hire English teachers per se. If you have a specialty in language or reading that would help, but you'd also be expected to handle maths and social studies.
