How much should I charge to tutor?

• I will be tutoring a little girl in 4th grade. She is having a lot of trouble with math and unless she gets the help she needs, she will be held back. I was originally going to tutor her with the other child I tutor on the same day at the same location. Now the mother wants me to tutor her additional days at their house (an hour round trip drive for me) A little about me: I went to undergrad for psychology and during year 3 decided to switch majors. I am now in school to become a midwife. When she was bringing her over to the original location (Where I was being paid for 2 children and not needing to drive anywhere else) I was charging her $10 an hour. Now I need to figure out how much to charge her to tutor her at her house.

  One-on-one tutoring is expensive if you consider that Sylvan Learning Centers charge about $40 for that level of service. That's why Sylvan recommends small groups for instruction which lowers the cost considerably. Most private tutors I know charge $15-20 per hour for a fourth grade student.
