What questions will be asked in an internship interview?

What kind of questions are asked in an interview for the JET Teaching Program (teaching english in Japan)?

  • Hi, I have an interview this week for a position as an ALT with the JET Program. Is there anyone who has gone through the interview process that can tell me what kind of questions they ask? So far I know that they ask a few role-playing questions. It is a teaching position, so any advice even on general questions asked during a teaching interview would be helpful! Thanks!

  • Answer:

It varies wildly from person to person and can include anything from questions about your paper application to random trivia about Japan to how you would handle specific situations you might encounter there. No two people have the same interview experience, even when they interview at the same embassy/consulate with the same interview panel. You should expect to be asked to do a short teaching demonstration, and you should know the contents of your paper application perfectly. There are many lists of potential interview questions out there and you should be able to find them by Googling.

It will help if you have teacher training or experience. They could ask you how you would teach some grammatical point. They could ask you how you would handle a large class. (Very common there) They could ask you how you would handle a specific class problem, like lack of interest or falling asleep. English is taught very differently in Japanese schools, as opposed to what you are applying for. I had older students come up and confront me with obscure Shakespearean grammar issues, although they couldn't pronounce the word "radio". I personally think that the main issues in Japan involve listening and speaking as opposed to reading and writing. Also, classes are often very quiet because the students don't want to volunteer responses until they are sure they can get it right. I had wonderful experiences there, but I had to leave my "stuff" outside and learn to adapt to their culture. Good luck!

Well you should know your resume inside out and be able to talk about your work experience and qualifications. They may well ask about your teaching and how you would handle certain situations; they can ask about the program itself to see if you've done your homework and also about Japan. They'll probably ask *why* you want to go there and teach. There are loads of questions they can ask so research as much as possible, put yourself in their position and write down (and then answer) as many possible questions as you can come up with.

Not sure why don't you check here: http://gaijinpot.com There's a forum in there for teachers in Japan. You don't need a TEFL. Also when you get started I think you'll find this site to be a big help in the classroom. http://eslinsider.com/how-to-teach-english-videos
