American students + schools similar to english students + schools?
-
I don't know what to be when I'm older, and I'm currently studying for my A levels. I don't really want to be a teacher in England, however the scenes of schools in America I see depicted on TV seem to have a much more relaxed setting and the teachers seem to have more freedom regarding lesson plans etc. OBVIOUSLY I know that what I see on TV may not be an accurate representation, so that is what I'm asking. Are American schools a little more liberal? I know you're not allowed to teach the theory of Evolution there but in general from what I've seen I get the impression that the classrooms are a lot more creative. I've seen science fairs, children in their own clothes etc. Do these things happen on a regular basis or is it just something you see on TV? Thank you for taking the time to read my question - I know it's a little silly. Also, how are American schools structured? Do you have primary and secondary or, like in the UK, first, middle and high?

Answer:
Schools are quite different in the USA, and they also differ from state to state. Most state schools do not have uniforms it's usually only privately owned schools that require a uniform. As for being more liberal and creative once again that would depend on the particular school. Evolution is taught in most schools ( I was taught evolution in a California school). And yeah we had science fairs and stuff. As for freedoms well once again it comes down to the individual school. American school I broken up in grades, 1 through 12. Elementary (grades 1-4) junior high (5-8) and high school (9-12). I have lived in the USA and UK for equal amounts of time ( I had most of my schooling in the USA). I can say that my USA schools where more casual and creative than the average UK school but I would not say ALL US schools are like that.

The main difference is that American students are pressurised into being more hypocritical. Fake politeness and fake sincerity are the norm in America. There is also far more racism and other biggoted attitudes that lead to segregation inside schools. It is shocking when you see it first hand. I hate to think what schools are like in areas where the gun culture is strong. I have always avoid them. There is more wealth difference between state schools in America. This affects standards more than it does in the U.K. Sport has a very high status in American society and the education system is central to that. Sports programs can bring a great deal of income into American schools and Universties. Sports scholarships and other scholarships are important targets for poorer students to fund their further education.
