How to become a foreign language teacher?

How to become a teacher of foreign language?

  • Answer:

That depends on two factors: (a) where you want to teach and (b) what language you want to teach and to what level. Local requirements on what is an acceptable qualification vary, even within the same country. For instance, in some places it is possible for a native speaker of English to find a job as a teacher of English as a Second Language with a CELTA degree, which can be taken after 4 weeks of study or less. In other contexts much more advanced qualifications, such as a college degree are required. The requirements for teaching the less well-known languages are often more flexible, because of a shortage of teachers.

Depending on the foreign language you would have to get a degree in that language, then you would need to get a teaching degree. From there you do whatever you need to do to become a teacher.

Do you mean that you want to teach English as a foreign language? I would assume so. Otherwise, your question makes little sense. I am an English teacher living and working as such in Mexico for the past 4 years. I got my TESOL certificate from the School for International Training. Their link is below. The class lasted about a month, was all consuming (I had to take a break from my day job to do it), and the greatest thing that I ever did to change my life. The cost was 2200 bucks back in 2002. There are other schools, but check each one out very carefully before signing up. Some are little more than scams, not being accredited. Wanna know more.....email me (anyone). Good Luck! Rob

learn the language, GO to that country, LIVE in that country, learn the culture, take photos, etc... then/and finish college, major in that language, enroll in a teaching program, and get your masters degree...and there you go! you can apply to get certification, and you are a teacher.

I think the best thing would be learn as much of the language as you can. A class hates a teacher who doesn't know what they are talking about. So make sure you really want to teach that language because you are teaching students something totally different. They know about Math, Science, and Reading, but you're teaching them something new. So be as prepared as possible so your students can successfully learn the language.
