Why do schools constantly not teach what goes on around the world today?
-
All I ever learned through out school was history! Europes history, Asias history, Canadas history, African hstory! but what about America today! People say kids today are ignorant and don't care but thats only because people don't teach them to care. Instead people use computers and TVs as baby sitters for children to watch Spongebob and Billy and Mandy! They aren't taught to care, they have no one ever teaching them about what effects them today! Why do schools constantly not teach what goes on around the world today?

Answer:
We are forced to teach the curriculum which is directly tied to the state tests. It's all a part of NCLB. Gotta love it!

Schools are already over scheduled. Schools need to have the basics first, before they start to add on extras. They need to make sure that math, English, social studies, American history and science are all being addressed. Once that's done, they can add on other subjects like foreign language, world affairs/history and even gym, art and music. Schools are underfunded and under a lot of stress to meet certain academic standards set forth by their districts and states. Also, I agree with the first poster. Standardized tests are taking away from crucial study time. Teachers are teaching for the tests and taking away from other important subjects. But, the districts emphasize this!! They want high tests scores.

Everthing revolves around the State tests. It's so crazy. Good teachers teach you a little something about the world today but I personally think that it should be put in the curriculum. Billy & Mandy is a brain draining show. It's stupid. That show in particular should not be used as a teaching tool. No form of television should.

1-Its not in the curriculum....which in most cases is already nearly to much for schools to cram in. 2-Most topics are very controversial. Schools and some teachers would like to avoid possible conflicts with parents over beliefs. 3-It is the PARENTS job to teach their kids to care about something other than Sponge Bob or Hannah Montana....NOT THE SCHOOLS!!! It is extremely sad that the basics of raising children are pushed on schools. Morals, beliefs, responsibility and respect should start at home and simply be reinforced at school. Often times this is far from the typical case. Often schools are the ones teaching theses things while parents get mad because someone actually did. It is a no win for nearly every school with at least a couple handfuls of parents.

Unfortunately, schools are forced to teach a curriculum that is determined ahead of time in order to keep their funding and accreditation. History is taught as a subject so the individuals can learn what has shaped the community/nation in the past and why people act they way they do now. Ideally, you could look at what happened somewhere in the past and find similar situations happening today and predict some of the outcomes. If the outcome is negative, you would then try to figure out a different solution that has not been tried. Rarely is this done in school because it takes lots of work from the teacher and not everyone in the class is interested in the same topics. Those who aren't interested, undermine the teacher's efforts. As the old saying goes, "You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make them drink it."

The reason that schools teach things like history, literature and math is so when you start to actually care about the things going on around the world you'll have enough background knowledge to be able to arrive at a conclusion about those things. Being constantly updated about current events is useless if you have no concept of the significance of those events. As for people using TVs as babysitters, you seem like you've reached the point where you can change the channel for yourself. Goodbye Spongebob!

the only thing going on in america is fighting in iraq thats why
hi
Everything comes with a price, everything you teach is something else you can't teach, and everybody has an opinion of what should be taught. It might seem like they are carelessly deciding what is today's lesson, but most classes through out the country follow pretty rigorous guidelines of each days lessons determined by groups of people who have dedicated their lives to deciding what they think is important for kids to learn... it's normally not even up to the teacher, we are only instruments of much bigger hands. How do you change it? You give up everything thing, study educational curriculums, and spend your live advocating your personal ideas, and fight as teachers and parents complain that you've done it all wrong. It's a rough road.
