Is there more career opportunity in MultiMedia or Graphic Design?

Can I be an English teacher in Japan or Korea with a Graphic Design bachelor's degree?

  • When I finish my degree, before I start my career as a graphic designer. (And before I begin grad school.) I was thinking to take a year or two in either Japan or Korea to teach English (or maybe even Spanish since it's my first language and I'm also fluent at it, as I am with English.) I think it's a great opportunity and it will be absolutely great with the culture exchange and all. So my question is, will I be able to teach English in Japan or Korea with just a Graphic Design degree? Or do they require you to have a degree related to education?

  • Answer:

I have a close friend from my graduate program who taught English in Japan for three consecutive years with a bachelor's and Master's in engineering. I taught English in France having studied English, but pretty much any non-English speaking nation would hire a native speaker to teach the language. Neither of us studied education until after we had taught abroad, interestingly enough. We talked about how each of our respective schools (high school level) essentially laid out the expectations for how we would teach and who to go to when we needed something (help, copies, schedules, etc.). My program was through the French government, but I can't recall if his was through the government or not. Also I know two girls who taught English in Korean elementary schools for a year each, and one of them studied pre-nursing and the other studied human development. Again, I don't know if their program was government-based or not. Research multiple programs for reputation and salary. My French salary was pitiful to my friend's Japanese salary, and the two Korean teachers essentially earned enough for cost of living and regional holiday travel. I think there are several options in first-world nations, and Japan in particular is eager to host native English speakers as teachers. I say absolutely go for it and know that whatever your education, you will be fine with an open mind and an eye for adventure! Good luck!

I'm a graphic designer and have lived (and taught English) in Japan for over 3 years now. Having a degree in education is helpful for getting a job but it's not, in the slightest, a prerequisite. All you need is a degree (Bachelor's or above) and be a native English speaker for base qualifications. Some schools or companies require certifications but that'll depend on your employer. Good luck!

By law you need a Bachelor's degree to teach in Korea (I'm pretty sure it's the same in Japan). It doesn't matter the subject, but if you have an ESL certification or an education-related degree, you can get a better job/more money. I have a BA in Psychology and taught here in Korea for a year and a half. Also, you need to be a native English speaker. Btw, if you do end up coming to Korea and have any questions, join the KTO Facebook page (www.facebook.com/koreatourism).
