Physically challenging jobs?

How challenging is it for people over 40 to find jobs teaching English in Asia?

  • I have a Masters degree in Education , TEFL certification, and a teachers license. I am very interested in teaching English in Asia- maybe in S Korea or Japan- The thing that concerns me is my age- I have noticed many people who teach abroad are in their 20s; whereas I am 43. Would I be seen as too old ? Where are the best prospects for someone like me? I don't have much money, so if I need a load of money to get set up, it may prove an obstacle.

  • Answer:

It is slightly more difficult but by no means impossible! Although there is a degree of ageism in TEFL there are also many schools who prefer older teachers and the gravitas they can bring to the classroom. And sometimes they have had experience with younger teachers of the "backpacker" variety who may not have been a professional as they could have been. At 43 things shouldn't be a problem at all. A teacher of 50+ may start to find problems and in some countries there are legal limits in place but these usually apply to teachers 60 or older. So I'd say go for it - with your qualifications you should be able to pick up work easily and if the school doesn't want you, well it's going to be there loss and not yours!

It is very easy to find those sorts of jobs. The only reason young people usually take those jobs is because most older people are settled and don't want to move to the other side of the world. Young people are usually more adventurous. Also, most older teachers have already been teaching for years and have good job security. New teachers can't find a job in the US right now because of the economy. Nearly every district has cut teachers in the last few years, and any openings are quickly taken by veteran teachers. So new teachers head to China...
