In What Year Was The First Genetic Test Done?

I'm afraid I made my last test too easy on my class...opinions please (first year teacher)?

  • I teach second grade and everytime I gave the premade science book test, most of the kids would fail. This chapter was about the life cycles of various animals. I taught normally. Then, the day before the test, I created a review sheet. The kids had to fill in the blank. At the end of each blank I wrote what page the answer was on and they had to find it in their science book. Then, we went over the answers. For homework, I gave them another review sheet, except instead of fill in the blank, I reworded it into questions. They had to answer those. Finally, I created a test that had all the EXACT same information from the two sheets, except it was presented differently and I reworded a lot of stuff. I also made them create a Venn Diagram, which WAS NOT on the sheets (but they did it 100% correctly) Almost everyone passed. A student who normally gets 20s and 30s got her first 73%. Did I make it too easy?

I kind of see what you are saying, maybe you made the test too easy because it's kind of like a ratio of passing and failing, not saying that you want to have people failing or anything but you wanted it to be fair, instead of the person who normally makes F's and take one test, knowing that they didn't master the concepts and make a 73? I think you have to really look through the test before you give it, to make sure it wasn't so easy that you just fly right through it. You wanted to make the students actually think. Or maybe like the other answerers were saying that your students probably mastered your lessons and maybe that girl that made 20's actually studied or put forth an effort, who knows....lol. Now you know if think you made mistakes just remain fair, encouraging, cuz Lord knows we need good teachers, bless you!

It sounds like you properly prepared your students for the test. If your students do well, that doesn't mean that the class is too easy, it means that you are a good teacher. If your second grade students don't usually have high grades, then I would recommend taking tips from other teachers, because that probably means that they don't understand the material. Sounds like you did a good job, keep it up, and good luck!

if the average is 73% in the second grade then it was probably too hard. A 77% inhigh school is considered good, so ur test was just right.

First of all think of the subject matter. Some of the 2nd grade science topics are not very "kid friendly"... at least not at our school. Life cycles is pretty "fun" stuff. Now, you didn't talk about how much you normally review, so I can't compare that information, but it sounds like you provided them with a great opportunity to excel. The fact that the venn diagram wasn't on the review and they got it right as well (and a lot of kids don't understand venns that well) shows that you did a great job presenting the material to your students. Enjoy a little pat on the back and be proud of your students (and their families for helping them study!). Take care.

i wouldn't think so because our teacher also gives us a review sheet (sometimes! for 6th weeks) and many of the things on the review is in the test but with answer that sometimes can mess me up but you just have to read it carefully and we sometimes just look over the worksheets he gave us to study[ by the way i am in junior high] but for a 2nd grade teacher i think it isn't hard but you can see if alot of them[ like the one you said above} is getting alot of good grades on the test would probably be easier or it could be that they are learning and able to answer it.

Sounds like you are doing a great job and always look after the ones who do not get it ( the teaching)- they may need your extra time - it is worth it - a child always remembers the teacher who made them feel like a learner not a loser! Also alot of these days the wordings/questions can and will throw a child off - It does the same to a parent too!

It doesn't sound like you did. It just seems like you gave them time to study. I found that when I did a lot of homework on a certain topic that was to be on a test I did much better due to practice and recognition. Also, since you reworded the questions it reads differently, therefore, they can't just memorize the questions/answers from the previous sheets and then do well on the exam. They have to know the question and answer completely, I believe.

I believe you're a teacher, because you use good grammar, punctuation, and capital letters, not to mention good spelling. Now, I would suggest that you shouldn't lower the standard. Teach the kids, give them a little extra homework, and raise both your expectations, and theirs, as well. When we grow up, most of us have the fondest memories of our toughest teachers.

hey how old are you?

I'm no teacher, but sounds like to me you just made sure the children mastered the material. Very nice technique :)
