What are disadvantage/advantage of essay/objective exam?

I don't think students necessarily learn more to prepare for an essay exam. They'll still just spout out what they think you want them to say. Essay exams develop the ability to communicate in writing, to organize, and to recall facts that are connected (cause/effect relationships, comparison/contrast, and so on). Objective exams promote knowledge of specific facts (definition of terms, details of events, and so on). Which is easier to take depends on the individual student. Some students are able to write effective essays even when their knowledge is sketchy, so the essay test is easier for them. Other students have perfect recall of facts but lack communication or writing skills, so the objective test is easier for them. For teachers, objective exams are much easier to grade, because the answer is either right or wrong. Grading essay exams takes subjective judgment, which takes more time.
