How to become a Foreign English teacher?

  • Hi, I would like to know how to become a Foreign English teacher. I live in Queensland and I don't know which study/courses I should take. I ask a friend in Japan if it is possible to do a Tesol course and then work in Japan. She said Tesol isn't very popular it is best to become a English teacher. I would like to teach mainly in Japan then in Europe. If anyone could give me some information I would be grateful. Thanks

    In general you'll need a degree and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work in places like Japan teaching English. The degree can be in almost any subject as it is usually required for the visa only so you will find teachers with a degree in Engineering or Sociology. Having said this, to help get the job it's obviously better to be English or language related, for example a degree in English literature. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com). Once you have the qualifications you can find work either by answering advertisements online privately or using an agent.

Standard answer! Learn how to teach. Attend a four year teacher's college and at the same time major in English. You should also take an ESL teaching course. Simply knowing English does not qualify you to teach English. Inquire at the foreign embassy and learn their work visa regulations.

You'll need a 4 year degree for the visa in Japan. TEFL isn't necessary. I've lived in Japan for 5 years, and I can count the number of TEFL holders I know on 1 hand. And I know a lot of English teachers! Look on the gaijinpot website to see job listings.
