What do you think about a math book with only examples ?
-
I have been teaching math for about 4 years. Students in my algebra class have informed me that the textbooks do not have enough examples and lack detail. I am currently working on an example book just for ALGEBRA. The idea is to have a book where different type of problems are solved. I do plan on marketing this book for teachers, students as well home-schoolers. This book will provide students with detailed examples at different degrees of difficulty. I have already heard from my students that this is a good idea and would definitely purchase such a book. I realize there are some books out there such that Schaum's outlines, but they leave out some important examples and concepts. It should not be mistaken for a textbook, but rather an example book to be used along with a textbook. I would like to hear from some of you and what you think. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you. For a sample see below: http://www.scs.gmu.edu/~mwester1/completing-the-square.pdf

Answer:
I think its a really great idea. Everyone learns different and I know I would of enjoyed that. I know with most Math textbooks the examples they give seem to be the easiet in the world to solve or so difficult that it is hard for people to understand what is going on in the example. My only suggestion is to have different levels of difficulty on your examples too.

I answered this question from you a few days ago, but didn't read your page until after that. You left out the description/explanation of at least one step. No, I don't really see the point -- there's not enough explanation given, and it's passive on the student's part. I guess some teachers might consider it useful, if their texts don't have enough examples, but do have complete explanations -- and you could talk to some publishers about the idea. But it would make more sense to supplement your inadequate text other ways. The whole point is for students to understand what's going on.
