    Some of the favorites when I taught first grade were The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Stone Soup, The Carrot Seed, Love You Forever, Good Night Moon, all the Mercer Meyer books, The Runaway Bunny, Pablo the Penguin, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, A Salmon for Simon, and the many wonderful predictable books with rich language and some repetition so that the kids can learn to read them fairly quickly.

I worked in first grade last year and the kids got into Magic Tree House by Pope. Every chapter is a cliff hanger for the next and every book follows tha last. They teach things about history, and the world in a fun way. The kids loved trying to solve the mysteries and they really got into it. Now in 2nd grade with many of the same kids, I am on #31. They are great books to introduce them to chapter books and take them everywhere in their minds. I actually enjoyed reading them. Hope this helps alittle.

If you are thinking about a book that you read over a semister I would recommend one of the Boxcar Children series or "The Last of the Really Great Wangdoodles."
