How to play WOW board game?

How do you go about making a trivia board game that people will actually want to play?

  • So, I tutor (mostly college freshmen) in general chemistry. Most of the time we work on problems; homework, in-class assignments, practice exams and quizzes, blah blah blah. Once in a while, though, we play Jeopardy! because I am a big fan. Buuut, I want to make a board game! Because I think it will be fun to make and play. Problem is, I don't have any big ideas on how to go about this? All I know is that it should be fun, interactive, college-level, about the topics we've covered and will cover, adaptable? and most of all not childish or demeaning. I can just wing it because I do sort of have an idea of what I want to do, but it'd be nice to get someone else's perspective because I am not a big board game person. Ideas?

I think a good way to do things would be like Chem Pictionary. Drawing out Chem concepts is a great way to better understand them. It's better to reinterpret information by drawing it out than simply regurgitating answers Jeopardy-Style. Just grab a white board, get some cards with concepts and things, and make sure the only letters they can draw are chemical symbols. Re-encoding information for memorisation is important. If you're going to make a game it will be more productive to make the game a challenge to understand and re-evaluate the concepts instead of the tired question and answer format.
