Salary of radiology technician (x-ray tech)?
-
I have searched several places online and there seems to be a different average salary everywhere i look. One website said the average salary for a radiology tech. was around $35,000, while other websites said 50 and $60,000 for the average annual salary.... So which is it? I am planning on getting my AS degree for radiology at my community college, but i dont want to be stuck with a career which makes an average of only $35,000. any help and advice on how to make more money as an x-ray tech would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Answer:
The correct title is Radiologic Technologist. Pay varies greatly by location. In southeastern Michigan, starting pay for registered RTs is about $18-$20/hour. You can find radiology salary info here: https://www.asrt.org/content/rts/surveyresults/wageandsalarysurvey/wagesalsurvey2007.aspx

while it does depend on the actual location of where you are working the average rate is around $100,000 in the average sized metro buisnesses. its very good money these days.

As someone who determines wages for our employees I find most salary surveys useless. They either lump several categories of employees into one generic category or are performed by associations who, by their nature, are subject to severe selection bias. In both cases, surveys tend to inflate wages for the average person. If I were you, I would look on your state government's web site to see if they publish wage survey data. I know that in my state the state published data is extremely reliable and reflects reality. For example, here is a link to the 2007 radiolgic technologist wage data survey results for Iowa: http://www.iowaworkforce.org/LMI/occupations/wages/Statewide/PAGE0018.HTM As a recently graduated x-ray technologist you should start at $33 to $40k, depending on where you live and the kind of facility you work in. Hospitals will tend to pay more than physician offices.
