What should I take for college?

What classes can a low functioning down syndrome adult take at a community college?

  • she can not read or write? she can follow instructions and somewhat memorize. she knows how to use the internet, she loves activities and dancing and can speak. although because she can not read and write she is being denied from certain classes at the college, what classes "can" she take? this is just to keep her busy. i want her to take a computer class, or a cooking class, or some type of physical education class. but because we are in mid semester right now they are not accepting her....please enlighten me and let me know what she CAN take or do at a community college. to my knowledge it is her right to attend college and can not be denied. therefore i'd like to know what i can do to help her stay busy and make her feel good that she is attending "college"

  • Answer:

they do not need tro accept her into any credit courses--as she is not otehrwise qualified--even with reasonable accommoations they certainly don't need to accept her mid semester many community colleges offer 'adult education' classes these are non credit classes that are often centered around hobbies--look into this division-- by law--they would have to accpet her there--otehrwise it would be discrimination acording to teh ADA---you are NOT guaranteed admission to a college because you have a disability-- you must still meet the qualifications--but you must be granted reasonable accommodatiosn to meet those qualifications--such as extended time on entrance test, test in braille, having test read to you

She can take cooking and do art. She can take any classes where reading isn't really required. Cooking, she can memorize.

Ask the institution.

how could she use the internet if she can't read or write?

She has no right to attend college. And she certainly has no right to start in the middle of a semester. That said, they probably have some classes she could take next semester. The community college classes around here have dance lessons. Maybe she could take one of those? Why don't you have a meeting with someone at the college and discuss it together?
