  • I have a degree in psychology. What additional training is required for me to become an early intervention specialist?

    I used to do Early Intervention as a speech therapist (now I do school age). Probably NO additional training, as long as what you have done so far with your work history/practicum has provided experience. Things vary from state to state. Contact your state's dept. of education. Or, easier yet, contact an agency that provides early intervention services and ask them. They will know for sure what you have to do. In PA we have Intermediate Units that are part of the school system, and they always seem to know these things. Starting out doing Team Evaluations can be a good way to get exposure to the other disciplines treating the kids (PT, OT, ST).

You would need in depth knowledge of developmental issues. Most areas require some level of certification...a master's degree or certificate..in a feild such as behavioral management, special ed or similiar fields. This would provide you with information on areas such as behavioral programs, the various strategies and therpies used with disabilities and delays as well as providing you with training to implement, support and document these programs. The best thing to do is to contact your local school system to find out what they are looking for.

In Texas, Early Intervention Specialist work for Early Childhood Intervention Program, as an assistant director I hire and train EIS's, and your degree is enough to get you hired. You will be required to complete a Competency Demonstration System during the first two years of employment.
